Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 4 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion, finely chopped 1/2 cup
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar or red wine vinegar
  • 3/4 cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 12-ounce bag trimmed fresh green beans, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces or 1 (10 to12 ounce bag frozen cut green beans

Method

  1. Cook bacon in an extra-large skillet over medium heat until crisp, 8 to 10 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer bacon to a paper towel–lined plate. Reserve 2 tablespoons of the rendered bacon grease in the skillet; discard remaining grease.
  2. Add onion to the skillet with reserved bacon grease. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly browned, about 4 minutes.
  3. Add garlic and vinegar; cook until fragrant and vinegar is slightly reduced, about 1 minute.
  4. Stir in chicken broth, brown sugar, pepper, and salt; bring to a boil. Add green beans and crumbled bacon. Cover and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook until green beans are tender and flavors are well combined, 10 to 15 minutes. If liquid reduces too quickly, add additional chicken broth, 1 tablespoon at a time, as needed.
